File
and Web Space - Remote Access
In addition
to computer access, C.M.S. lab accounts provide 150 MB of disk
space that can be used for file storage and/or web space. Note that
this is distinct
from web space for faculty, courses and units provided on the Faculty
server.
Outside of CMS Labs,
this space can be updated via ftp.
For ftp
access, use an ftp program to
access the host web.educ.ubc.ca. You will see
two directories file-space and web-space that correspond
to the two drives/spaces.
Security requirements
require us to restrict access to the server. Currently you can ftp from
- any
computer registered in the UBC domain. This includes most on campus
computers, UBC Netinfo/Interchange dial-in access, on campus wireless
access and VPN access.
- most
local computers using Shaw or Telus broadband connections. Problems
accessing from these services are usually problems with registering
host names. You should see a host name and an IP address below:
DNS host name ""
IP Address "38.103.63.62"
If not
contact Telus/Shaw and ask them to fix your entry (or use UBC's
VPN).
If you are not in one of the following domains, or having problems
with Telus/Shaw/UBC Wireless, use UBC's Virtual
Private Network (VPN) service.
Permitted Domains
- .ubc.ca
- .bc.hsia.telus.net
- .vc.shawcable.net
- .vf.shawcable.net
- .vn.shawcable.net
- .vs.shawcable.net
- .vw.shawcable.net
Please
remember to keep copies of your documents. Although we will be backing
files up,
CMS takes no responsibility for lost files. Also remember that accounts
are terminated one year after you cease to be an Education student
(or if you are part time, when your course finishes).
To access web space
using a browser, use a URL of the form web.educ.ubc.ca/userid/filename.html,
where userid is your CMS lab id.
