Computing & Media Services

Information for Instructors

This page covers several points you should be aware of to make it easier to use the labs at Computing and Media Services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact an CMS staff member for assistance (604-822-5248 or cms.educ@ubc.ca).

Please take a moment to review the following information...

General Information

  • NO drinks or food allowed near the computers!!

Please enforce this while your class is in the computer lab. Damage to equipment has occurred, affecting the operation of the lab. Students who bring food or drink into the computer lab may have their accounts disabled.

  • For special software requirements, please contact Michael Shepard (MS Windows XP), Paul Chan (Mac OS X) or Bob Bruce. Please give CMS staff advance notice (one week) for the installation of additional legal software.
  • To access any computer in Computing and Media Services, a username and password are required. A temporary class set of ids are available upon request by an instructor (see Vicki in Room 1008 a few minutes before your lab booking). To create a username, follow the instructions on noted MS Windows computers in Room 1011 or use one of the Lab Registration stations in Room 1008 or Room 1. Usernames require up to one business day to process.
  • Computers must be logged off after use. Computers not logged off are susceptible to being accessed by other users. This creates serious security concerns, as well as a potential loss of printing quota.
  • Please remember to turn on the lights in the lab after class.
  • Please remember to turn the projector and remote control off at the end of class.
