Backup Guidelines for Instructors

Course Restores from Online or Offline Backups:

Only WebCT Vista administrators can restore courses. Instructors/designers cannot restore a course.

Please contact Sue Wood (sue.wood@ubc.ca, 604.822.6390) if you need to restore a course.

Online Backups (Back Up Course) - Recommended:

Online Backups are a resource-efficient way of doing backups. They are quick and can be taken when needed. When an Online Backup is created, it is first added to the backup queue and is completed when the system is ready. It usually takes a matter of minutes. Online Backups are not downloadable.

A maximum of 5 Online Backups are currently allowed per course section. There are no space limitations.

Online and Offline Backups capture the same data (course content and student data).

To Create an Online Backup:

Click on Manage Course under Designer or Instructor Tools.

Click Backup.

Click backup course.

Your Online Backup will be listed along with the date and time it was completed:

backed up courses

Offline Backups (Save as File) – Not Recommended:

Offline Backups are created when a user wants to save an online backup to a file. Offline Backups are downloadable, but they are extremely resource intensive. Therefore UBC IT strongly discourages the use of Offline Backups for WebCT Vista.

If you need to copy content from one course to another, please see the Copying Course Content section below.

Copying Course Content:

Unlike the old WebCT CE 4, in WebCT Vista courses should not be reused. Instead, a new course should be created, and course content can be copied from an old course during the creation process if desired.

To request that a new course includes content from another course, choose "copy content from an existing course" when requesting a new course, including the course ID of the course where the content should be copied from:

blank or copy content
